"The women of Bikini Kill let guitarist Billy Karren be in their feminist punk band, but only if he's willing to just "do some shit." Being a feminist dude is like that. We may ask you to "do some shit" for the band, but you don't get to be Kathleen Hannah."--@heatherurehere

Saturday Morning PMSing

The webcomic Saturday Morning Breakfast Cereal is sometimes borderline misogynist, but today it hit the nail on the head:

hello i came across your blog, i run a blog for an introducory women's and gender studies class. Basically the point of my blog is it is a safe area for students write what they think as they aproach the idea of feminism, which in most cases is new to them. i assure you most of the blogs that they post are interesting to read, and it would mean alot to me if you would follow our blog. the site is wearethewave.blogspot.com.

Oh my gosh, I was thinking of posting that very comic on my own site! I actually love SMBC because it's stereotypical to the point of ridiculousness - it really makes us question just how stupid some of the things we assume are.

On another note I am just super stoked that there's a whole community for feminist-minded men. The site I'm posting from is actually pretty new, but I've had the concept in mind for quite a while. I hope you won't mind if I put you on my blogroll =) I'll definitely be posting something about feminist men soon!

Hi!, a few weeks ago I learnt about a book (an illustrated story) that writes about Cindirella's life after she's found her prince... A life that turns out not to be happy at all. It is being selfpublished at the moment, and only in Spanish, but the illustrations are beautiful and we interview the authors. I thought you might find it interesting. The interview is in Hassen's blog: http://newritings.wordpress.com/2009/02/22/saying-it-with-comics-girls-matter/

In solidarity,
marta

That is not misogynist. I'm guessing that you missed the punchline; the joke here is the irony in the fact that even in the most intellectually advanced fields of research scientists still can't transcend basic prejudices. It's a simple observation on the pervasiveness of sexism in our culture. It doesn't support or glorify this sexism in any way, and so I repeat: that is not misogynist. Maybe if you pursued a degree in something actually useful instead of wasting four years on 'feminist studies' you would be able to understand simple webcomics.

I agree with Tina! If someone says, "Hey, did you know that on average females score about 40 points lower than males on the math part of the SAT?" then is that misogynist or sexist? Of course not! It's just a statement of a fact and facts can't be inherently misogynist. I consider myself a feminist but it disgusts me how loud-mouthed man-hating feminists give us all a bad name! Feminism should be about eliminating sexual injustices, not trying to put men down or pretending that there are no differences between the sexes. That's what lesbians are for.

Thanks for commenting, Tina, but my post read that this comic strip is sometimes borderline misogynist, but today it hit the nail on the head. I posted it because I think it's interesting that the author, who often runs stuff that is borderline misogynist, also "gets it" sometimes...

@Mary:

I'm tempted to remove your comment altogether, because of the homophobia, but I'm leaving it up because not only does it piggy-back on what was probably a simple misreading of the post by Tina, but it contains the hilarity of "facts can't be inherently misogynist". Thank you for the chuckle.

@Tina
What's the point in attacking Jeff's degree or intelligence? Clearly there was a simple miscommunication.

@Jeff
It is a bit unclear what you meant. I first read your statement as Tina did, which made me pause to read the comments here. It might help to clarify.
